The big idea: the Apple Watch reads your pulse with light. Its green LEDs flash hundreds of times a second and its photodiodes count how much your blood soaks up with every heartbeat; the electrodes in the crown and on the back record a single-lead ECG (Apple's wording; the battery's up to 18 hours and the 396 × 484 screen are Apple's figures for the 45 mm case, and 72 bpm is a typical resting pulse used as the example).
