Why does the wax in a lava lamp rise, stop and sink again all by itself? Press the steps, or wait and the machine runs them by itself.×3

The big idea: cold wax (1.018 g/cm³) is a little heavier than the liquid (1.000), so it lies on the bottom. A 25 W bulb heats it to 58 °C; it expands to 0.988, now lighter, and rises. Under the cap it cools to 41 °C, passes 1.000 again and sinks. One slow loop, running about 90 minutes after you switch it on. Densities and temperatures are a model of a typical 36 cm lamp.
